JoTo DIY: Catching all the angles for your press releases

Catching All the Angles

Every story, every song has an angle or a hook. It is what grabs the audience and attracts their attention. As a business owner or entrepreneur the idea of having an angle on your story, i.e., your press release may at first seem repulsive.  After all, your product or service does not need a gimmick or a line to sell it or does it? Having an angle is not bad thing – it is the attention grabber, so don’t feel ashamed that it will overshadow your product. Realize that this is what makes it attractive to the reader – the reporter and to the public itself. Realize also that there are thousands and thousands of companies competing for their attention and you really do have to convey something special and of course interesting to cut through the clutter. And that something is that interesting approach or viewpoint that sets you apart. It is your unique selling proposition. Once you have discovered this and it may take some time and some brainstorming to get there. But I assure you as it well worth it. Stories will just begin to flow off of that USP. Make it interesting and you will succeed make it boring and you will get a snooze. And since we don’t want to hear the audience snoring but rather hear them clamoring for more by all means strike a chord with your public.

Whatever you write it is important to keep it focused and tight. Keep in mind you have a split second to garner their attention. You have to be quick and succinct to get to them and don’t make them feel bombarded with information. Give them that immediate idea that makes them want to read more. You are creating mystery and intrigue not writing a novel. You need to answer the usual questions that you learned in Writing 101 – Who, What, When Where, Why and how! Strike the chord and be relevant to their lives and you will have a fan. Keep your release short and to the point, 500 words or less will keep their attention especially if your story fits on one page. You could always provide a data sheet or a later release with more details. Remember short, simple to the point and with an edge to draw them in.

There are numerous reasons for writing and sending out a press release. Here is a list of PR opportunities for you and your company. Here’s a bunch in no particular order: You come out with a new product, service or website; How about offering a freebie like a helpful tips, newsletter, whitepaper or eBook; New hires are always good for a blurb in trade journals or local papers; Celebrity endorsements or testimonials are always news worthy; Reaching company milestones like anniversaries, etc. are also good angles; Perhaps you are sponsoring a team, a contest or even a sweepstakes – good announcements to get out; there are so many possibilities.

JoTo In: TNT’s Dramatic Surprise on A Quiet Square

A Dramatic Surprise on A Quiet Square

When TNT opens up a new market – they do it big time. In fact this intro into Belgium is so explosive TNT gets to live up to its name! To launch their channel TNT in Belgium they placed a big red push button on an average Flemish square of an average Flemish town. A sign with the text “Push to add drama” invited people to use the button. The results are not for the faint of heart – but wow they surely know how to push buttons! This is a great PR stunt!!!

JoTo In: “Iranian We Love U: A Message to Iran from Isral”

Sometimes and perhaps more often than not, it is time for governments to get out of the way and let the people speak for themselves from their hearts. This is such a case – a beautiful dialog between the peoples of Iran and Israel. JoTo picked this as a JoTo In due to the grassroots efforts of the Israeli people who are taking their own PR into their own hands. That’s the beauty of self-publishing today…we can bypass mainstream media to get our messages out if they won’t communicate our message.

“To the Iranian people: To all the fathers, mothers, children, brothers and sisters. For there to be a war between us, first we must be afraid of each other, we must hate. I’m not afraid of you, I don’t hate you. I don t even know you. No Iranian ever did me harm. I never even met an Iranian…Just one in Paris in a museum. Nice dude. Please share this video and help it reach all the Iranian people.”

JoTo DIY: All about you…and Google

As promised this DIY is all about you. Can you imagine a more fascinating subject than your organization or company? For certain you have a certain perception of your group. You like to think it lives up to your standards and that its reputation is nothing but pristine. Perhaps it is time to take an outside look. There are a number of ways to do this. The first of course is Google. And just like last month when we suggested that you Google your competition, this time we ask you to Google yourself. There are a couple of ways to go about this.

  1. First is just a straight out Google of your company name. Let’s just check what is out there in that vast cyber-universe we call the World Wide Web.
  2. Next is just a simple addition type in “reviews” right after your company name. Read what the public has to say about you. You might be pleasantly surprised or you might be in for a rather rude awakening. Either way this data is something to work with and can help you improve public perception of your company or organization.
  3. Some sites enable you to contact the reviewer. Here is a perfect opportunity to get a second chance and create a great relationship. You don’t have to give away the store to sway the customer. You just have to provide great customer service.
  4. Remember this: great customer service will not make up for a lousy product.  And the corollary: lousy customer service will destroy a great product. You need both to be successful in this world. In today’s rapid moving communication system, word travels fast and you want the perception of your company at the highest level.

JoTo Out: TripAdvisor Axes Controversial Dirtiest Hotels PR Campaign

I understand controversy – it can come with a caveat.  But it’s a great tool for PR – one that can open the door…if done right.  One of the things I always looked forward to was TripAdvisor’s annual Dirtiest Hotel series. It told me where I did not want to stay. The website had published a list every January outlining the worst hotels in each region, compiled by user feedback from the previous 12 months.

Hotels began to get on the bandwagon – at least we know Hampton Inn did.  Check out their HAZMAT commercial  - it’s perfect and it shows that they were listening to what their consumers want:

Well, we at JoTo believe that people still want to know who is dirty and who is not!  Yes it was controversial and yes many hotels (chains and otherwise) were very unhappy with the published results, but there was some truth there and as long as they verified their sources, TripAdvisor had a good thing going in PRLand with this caper.

The new TV show, Hotel Impossible, is further evidence of the necessity of such reports:

But alas TripAdvisor is no longer airing out the dirty laundry. Woe is us!  This is a JoTo Out!

JoTo MoJo Laugh Truck: Korean Method To Making Popcorn and more!

As the month wears on, and the numbers are not always doing what you want them to do, it is time for a mid-month laugh. We call it the MoJo Laugh Track ‘cuz that is what we want you to do – have a good laugh and get back to work and make those numbers highest ever!

Korean Method To Making Popcorn

We cannot vouch for the accuracy of this video. But if this is the standard method of making popcorn in Korea, it might account for a few things going on over there. And we thought Quaker Oats was the only things shot from a cannon.

JoTo In: British Airways Unveils Olympics-Themed ‘Dove’ Airbus

We love all things Olympic and most of the time those things labeled British, so we simply could not omit this rather vivid campaign from British Airways who has painted one of its Airbus A319s to resemble a “giant gold dove.” The Associated Press says the plane is “the first in a flock of Olympic-themed jets that will fly during this summer’s London Games.” The jet went into service on Tuesday, making it “the first of nine similarly decorated Olympic planes,” according to AP.  The Guardian of London says it took “a team of 24 people took eight days to spray paint the aircraft white, with gold strokes to represent feathers (damn that’s good, fast production!). The planes will be in service around Europe over the next year. The design of the plane uses the cockpit for a beak, fuselage and wings for the main body, and the tailfin as a tail.”

Kudos – this is a very cool PR caper!

JoTo Tampa Bay: Clearwater Beach Restaurant Week is coming!

3rd Annual Clearwater Beach Restaurant Week Expands Kick-Off Party for Higher Attendance

On May 13-19, Clearwater Beach will be the spot of the 3rd Annual Clearwater Beach Restaurant week, and the Kick-off party is moved to the streets to service a tremendous turnout.

(Clearwater Beach, Fla,) April 11, 2012 – What started out a way to keep businesses afloat during the 33 million-dollar Beach Walk project, Clearwater Beach’s Restaurant Week quickly expanded to 1500-plus attendees and counting.  This year, during the week of May 13-19, the streets of Clearwater Beach will be jam-packed with foodies and restaurant go-ers for the 3rd Annual Clearwater Beach Restaurant Week.

Due to the growing popularity of the event, the Clearwater Beach Chamber decided to expand the location of the Kick-Off party.  After originally holding it at the Clearwater Beach Aquarium and on Beach Walk, the Kick-Off Party is moved to the streets of Beach Walk (at S. Gulfview Blvd. between the Hyatt Regency Resort and Crabby’s Bar & Grill) to accommodate the higher-number of attendees.  The Kick-off party will be held on day, May 11th, from 5:00-8:00pm.

“We had more than people attend the event last year so we’ve taken the Kick-Off Party to the street so we can cater to more people and have space for two stages for double-the entertainment,” said Darlene Kole, President and CEO of the Clearwater Beach Chamber of Commerce. “We are expecting a tremendous turn-out.”

In addition to the mouthwatering cuisine, there will be beer & wine sales, two stages featuring live music, an opportunity to buy raffle tickets for several value-packed gift baskets, a Live Chef’s auction and a fireworks display at dusk.

Tickets to the party are $20 per person entry fee, which will grant access to more than 40 participating restaurant’s tents that will line Beach Walk, each featuring tasty samples from their menu. An optional wine tasting wrist band can be purchased for an additional $10.00. Tickets may be purchased at the door during the event or at the Clearwater Beach Chamber Office by visiting them online at www.ClearwaterRestaurantWeek.com or by calling 727-447-7600.

About the Clearwater Beach Restaurant Week:
Clearwater Beach Restaurant Week is more than a celebration of Clearwater Beach’s incredible food scene; it’s a celebration of the economic engine that runs the Gulf Coast – tourism. The event not only gives restaurants a much-needed boost during a time when business often slows, but its economic impact is a ripple effect felt by the many ancillary businesses that provide goods and services to Clearwater Beach’s vital restaurant industry.  But don’t forget about the customers who love the event because in addition to showcasing the different Clearwater Beach restaurants in one venue, the specially-priced menus offer value that some say feels “downright decadent!” Clearwater Beach Restaurant Week’s value is lasting, as many customers who try new restaurants because of this week-long event return to dine again, and again, and again. A Worldly Musical Tour de Force

I don’t know if you are familiar with the Australian group Dead Can Dance and I confess I have only recently discovered them but boy oh boy the can really make some outstanding music. I am sitting here listening right now and feel so inspired by their sound. I should say made as they broke up but there have been reunion tours. DCD is “an ethereal neoclassical duo formed in Melbourne, Australia, in August 1981, by Lisa Gerrard and Brendan Perry. The band relocated to London in May 1982 and disbanded in 1998. Their 1996 album Spiritchaser reached No. 1 on the Billboard Top World Music Albums Chart. Australian music historian Ian McFarlane described Dead Can Dance as having an ambient style of world music that “constructed soundscapes of mesmerizing grandeur and solemn beauty…with African polyrhythms, Gaelic folk, Gregorian chants, Middle Eastern mantras, and art-rock.” (Thank You Wikipedia)

Dancing with the Wrecking Crew Orchestra

WCO is a very famous Japanese dance team. I think you will really dig what they can do. Watch them perform an intricately-lit Tron-themed routine in the dark wearing specially-designed glow-suits. The glow-suits showcase a type of dance technology in which performers are strapped with wireless, light-emitting ribbons and tapes that can be controlled remotely.

JoTo In – South by Southwest (SXSW)

If you are not familiar with South by Southwest (SXSW) you should be. This is an event of galactic implications. It is a major JoTo In – a wondrous phenomenon. It started out with music, branched out to film and technology/interactive. One of the most interesting aspects of this year’s festivities was the Google Village

You can read the history of SXSW here: http://sxsw.com/about/history

Google Village at SXSW

This week, like most of the Silicon Valley digerati, Google packed up and moved to Austin, Texas, for the South by Southwest Interactive festival, where they re-created a tiny version of the Googleplex. Renting out a series of houses and bars, Google turned one neighborhood in Austin into a mini Google festival. Rainey Street in Austin became a festival within the festival, with street musicians and food trucks gravitating to the area along with thousands of SXSW attendees who came to see Google’s view of the future.
