JoTo DIY: All about you…and Google

As promised this DIY is all about you. Can you imagine a more fascinating subject than your organization or company? For certain you have a certain perception of your group. You like to think it lives up to your standards and that its reputation is nothing but pristine. Perhaps it is time to take an outside look. There are a number of ways to do this. The first of course is Google. And just like last month when we suggested that you Google your competition, this time we ask you to Google yourself. There are a couple of ways to go about this.

  1. First is just a straight out Google of your company name. Let’s just check what is out there in that vast cyber-universe we call the World Wide Web.
  2. Next is just a simple addition type in “reviews” right after your company name. Read what the public has to say about you. You might be pleasantly surprised or you might be in for a rather rude awakening. Either way this data is something to work with and can help you improve public perception of your company or organization.
  3. Some sites enable you to contact the reviewer. Here is a perfect opportunity to get a second chance and create a great relationship. You don’t have to give away the store to sway the customer. You just have to provide great customer service.
  4. Remember this: great customer service will not make up for a lousy product.  And the corollary: lousy customer service will destroy a great product. You need both to be successful in this world. In today’s rapid moving communication system, word travels fast and you want the perception of your company at the highest level.

Word Out!

JoTo In: Google, Dunkin’ and Russia

Google Gets a Plus

At the top of our JoTo In list this month is Google+. Google has not had much success in the social media world but boy they have really put together one neat product and peeps are clamoring to get in. Forget about Buzz. Forget about the Wave. Google+ is for reals. Promotion of Google+ has been largely word-of-mouth and the media started picking up on it. It is still in beta and you cannot get in without an invitation. Now how clever is that?  They are up to about 20 million and growing rapidly.

Are You Dunkin?

I am not much of a donut store aficionado but do like my occasional dunks. Even I must admit that the suits at Dunkin’ Brands (The parent of Dunkin’ Donuts and Baskin-Robbins) have been doing quite a job with all their marketing accomplishments including strong franchises and strong customer loyalty. The advertising efforts only play up to their strengths and strengthen them. The proof – well they just made quite a splash with their IPO jumping 47% on their first day,  investors pushed shares to $27.85, up from the $19 initial price. Hopefully they don’t suffer from Krispy Kreme fallout.

Russia Takes Gold at National Geographic World Championship

Kudos to the National Geographic brand for organizing such a competition!

Defeating teams from 16 other regions, Russia took top honors at the 10th National Geographic World Championship held today at Google headquarters in Mountain View, California. Canada, the defending champion, came in second, and Chinese Taipei was third. The biennial competition, in which teams of students answer questions on physical, cultural and economic geography, is organized by the National Geographic Society. Google was the sponsor of this year’s contest.

Bill Gates calls for reinvention of toilet: Why?

Bill Gates may have given up running Microsoft, but he isn’t taking his retirement sitting down. The software-entrepreneur-turned-philanthropist’s charitable foundation has launched a new initiative aimed at improving the health of the billions of people who have no safe, sanitary way to get rid of their waste.

JoTo Out: The coal industry and more…

  • About Face(book)

In the latest episode of Social Media turning anti-social we discover the marred face of Facebook in Facebook Loses Face. It seems the lovely folks in Palo Alto decided it was in the best interests of the universe create the ultimate Google smear campaign. Unfortunately, for Facebook but fortunate for the rest of the world Facebook got busted big time and it has been blowing up in their ummmm Face(book).

  • Not All Coal Turns Into Diamonds

Last month we introduced you to the coal cares parody, the scary part is that it is a little closer to the truth than we thought. It seems that the Coal Industry really does target kids and has a complete marketing program in collusion with Scholastic to market their fumes and pollution. How do you spell insidious?

  • The New York Mess

They video many a soap opera in New York City but no soap opera fan would miss an episode of As the Mets Turn. The New York Mets may always be the understudy to the Yankees and they have gone through the ringer as sports teams go. But still they have some very loyal fans and a beautiful new ballpark. Recently Met ownership sunk to a new low as principle owner Fred Wilpon mocked nearly all of his top players, while comparing his team to a pile of poop.  Definitely an out… in fact JoTo gives them 3 outs.
