JoTo Tampa Bay: Clearwater’s Cleveland Street District

WEDNESDAY’S CUP: Clearwater center stages a revival

By: Gulf Coast Business Review

May 18, 2011

After years in the doldrums, Clearwater’s Cleveland Street business district appears to be making a comeback with the help of several new shops and a famous dolphin.

The Clearwater Downtown Partnership and Ruth Eckerd Hall are combining to host this year’s Momentum Awards May 25 in the Atrium Lobby at 601 Cleveland St. David Allbritton, chairman of the city’s Downtown Development Board, will be keynote speaker and Vice Mayor George Cretekos will offer a “State of Downtown” update.

Downtown Clearwater was once considered a “dead district” but has been experiencing new growth and revitalization. Examples of the resurgence include:

  • the upcoming release of “A Dolphin Tale,” a feature film about Clearwater Marine Aquarium’s best-known resident, Winter, and her prosthetic tail fin.
  • expansion of Blast Friday, which draws crowds to the Cleveland Street district on the last Friday of each month.
  • Clearwater Fashion and Arts Week, which is starting a movement to draw more arts and cultural activities downtown.
  • the completion and grand opening of the Clearwater Harbor Marina.
  • the opening of new businesses such as Casanova Restaurant and Lounge, Hispania Tapas Bar & Cafe, Blue Dahlia Marketplace, Olive Tree and Cafe 241, along with the expansion of Green Organic Food and Wine Bar and Tony’s Pizzeria and Ristorante.

JoTo Tampa Bay: “Light Up Clearwater”

“Light Up Clearwater”

A Benefit to Restore the Historic Capitol Theatre, starring Suite Caroline

Even if you are not a local Tampa Bay-ite – this is something you’ll want to come to! JoTo has been asked to help out on a cool project, right here in Tampa Bay. We’re pretty honored. It’s a special benefit performance featuring Clearwater’s own sensational teen recording artist Suite Caroline and students from The Marcia P. Hoffman Performing Arts Institute at Ruth Eckerd Hall.

The City of Clearwater and Ruth Eckerd Hall joined forces to renovate and revitalize the intimate Capitol Theatre located on downtown Clearwater’s beautiful Cleveland Street. Constructed and established in 1921, this classic structure, complete with a large mezzanine and furnishings reminiscent of a classic Hollywood theater, is one of the oldest operating theatres in the state of Florida. In 2009, the Clearwater City Council designated the Capitol Theatre a historical landmark. This is the first such designation by the city.

The benefit concert is to help raise funds to restore the historic landmark. Check out the event on Facebook here.

Don’t you know who Suite Caroline is?  We’ve done PR for the 4th Friday gigs in downtown Clearwater where she has performed several times.  She’s a prodigy!

“…it’s glaringly apparent that even though she’s just 13, when Suite Caroline straps a guitar over her shoulder and steps up to the mic, she definitely has ‘IT’.” ~David Norrie – What’s Hot Tampa Bay Magazine
